Malshi Dog Walking
The Malshi does tend to form a very close bond to their family unit and owner. Malshi dogs can then feel like they are responsible for protecting the family member when out on a dog walk, if you are not acting as the leader then they can take on the role and become defensive. To limit this behavior calm the dog at the start of the walk, make your Malshi sit, and obey commands before starting. Don’t let the dog lead you, change direction a few times, and give firm commands. If the Malshi dog is being protective, make them sit when a dog is approaching, stand in between the dogs, and reassure the dog that it’s okay.
We started walking our Malshi Dog at an early age when our puppy was 2 months old. In the beginning, we kept her away from all other dogs or areas where dogs are commonly walked. Once she had the necessary vaccination shots at the age of twelve weeks then we started taking her down to the local park and also to the beach.
When you first start walking any puppy it must be done in very short outings. A good way to start is by just taking them outside where you live on a leash so that they can adapt to the whole lead situation. And although puppies look like they are just full of energy you will find they can only manage a one to two minute walk when they are young.
It’s a fun stage with your puppy and nearly always results in the puppy holding the leash trying to guide you around.
Our WookiDog is rather scared of larger dogs or dogs that are overly hyper. She has been attacked and bullied a few times by much bigger dogs than her when she was young. During a walk, she might seem to have a slightly aggressive temperament when other dogs can approach her but she is just nervous, trying to protect herself. In no way is she an aggressive dog and I’ve met other Malshi owners who share the same story.
During Dog Walks our Malshi Dog is still desperate to meet other dogs of similar size. She does tend to just lose control a bit when she spots a dog she wants to say hello to. Even at the age of four years old we still have to restrict her contact with other dogs at the start of the walk until she has started to settle down. At the very start of the walk, she can be too excited, and meeting a dog straight away is too stressful for her. Once she has settled and is noticeably tired then we encourage her to meet other similar-sized dogs. If she shows any signs of being scared while meeting another dog during the walk we will stop the interaction quickly and give her a treat along with some praise. Positive reassurance seems to do wonders, the following dogs she will meet normally end up with happy interactions.
Malshi Dogs are active and do love walks, limiting the walk to half an hour to one hour is probably best for the dog. It depends on the weather, on a colder day the Malshi Dog would love to just keep walking for hours but on a hot day you don’t want them to overheat.
Our Malshi Dog seems to love running, the act of physically running but also just to have the chance to show off to all. She does like to prove she is the fastest, it’s an adorable trait.
