How much should a full grown Malshi weigh?

The average weight of a fully grown adult Malshi Dog is 15.4 lbs (7kgs). This would be considered an average-sized Malshi. Our Maltese Shih Tzu is 4 years old, is extremely active, and currently weighs 17.41lbs (7.9kgs). Her build is slightly larger than other Malshi Dogs we meet while on walks, being so active she has developed a very strong muscular build.

What does a Full Grown Malshi look like?

If the Malshi dogs coat is allowed to grow out the dog will have features similar to the Shih Tzu breed. The hair around the face and hair growing on the ears will look like Shih Tzus but the snout of the dog protrudes further out. This is a benefit of the Maltese mix, Malshi dogs won’t have the server breathing problems that are common with Shih Tzu dogs. The teeth of Shih Tzu dogs can also be undershot, resulting in dental problems but the Malshi doesn’t have this problem. The color of Malshi coats will resemble that of the Maltese breed, starting with some variation at a young age but then becoming a purer white with puberty.

At what age do Malshi puppies stop growing?

At the age of 8 months Malshi puppies will have stopped growing but they will not be at their full weight. Malshi dogs are likely to develop slightly faster than larger dog breeds. The photos below show the growth of our Malshi Dog from a puppy at six weeks of age, up until 4 years of age. Some people say Malshi Dogs stop growing at 2 months of age but that is incorrect, you can see she had grown a significant amount during the period from 3 months of age up to 12 months of age. And even now at 4 years of age, she seems larger to us than when she was 12 months old.

We chose to spay our female Malshi at the age of 18 months, at this stage the dog is considered to be fully grown and has reached their full weight. The typical age for a dog to be desexed is suggested at an age of 4 to 6 months. This is before the first heat cycle and will ensure no unwanted litters.

But there are upsides and downsides to jumping in early to have the dog spayed. Having your female Malshi spayed before the age of four years can have the added health benefit of reducing the risk of uterine infection later in life.

People who wait to spay their dogs until after their second heat greatly increase the risk of mammary tumors in their pets.

But early spaying can increase the risk of hip dysplasia, torn ligaments, bone cancer, and urinary incontinence. Spaying the dog well before puberty can alter the dog’s height, a Malshi desexed before puberty can grow a little bigger.

Overall Malshi dogs grow to a really manageable size, they are a fun-sized dog with loads of energy and character but also love to settle down at night as a lap dog.
